The Blue Grotto in Capri: how to visit it

Capri can easily be considered as a heavenly place and the boat tour has many surprises. Among the many stages, a mandatory destination for all visitors is certainly the Blue Grotto: a place where nature has been able to create a spectacular piece of art.

What is the Blue Grotto of Capri

Along the coast of Anacapri, you can find a natural cavity with a rather particular conformation, which gives life to an optical phenomenon, to say the least, unique: the entrance of the Blue Grotto looks like an underwater window, which uses sea water to filter the red light coming from the outside giving the water the characteristic blue color. The show is also enriched by the silvery reflections generated by the objects submerged in the cave.

How to visit the Blue Grotto of Capri

The visit to the Blue Grotto of Capri can take place only in certain climatic conditions and strictly on board of small row boats available near the cave itself: tickets can be purchased in a floating ticket office and the price includes in a single ticket the boat crossing and entrance to the cave. 60 meters long and just 25 meters wide, the Blue Grotto is extremely low and the "window" of the entrance measures only 2 meters in width and 1 in height: in order to enter it is necessary to lie down by boat, while the sailor pulls the boat to the inside of the cave using a chain attached to the rock face. Once inside, you will be greeted by the magnificent spectacle of the blue and silvery reflections of the water, which stand out within the darkness of the cave, all accompanied by the typical Neapolitan songs of the sailors, whose voice bounces between the rocky walls with an incredible echo.

Reach the Blue Grotto of Capri by land

The entrance to the Blue Grotto is easily reachable by walking from the center of Anacapri: traveling about 3.5 km along via Pagliaro you reach a staircase that leads directly to the mooring of boats at the entrance to the cave. Alternatively, there is also a bus that leaves from Piazza della Pace in Anacapri and in 15 minutes takes to the entrance of the Blue Grotto.

Reach the Blue Grotto with a boat tour of Capri

Many tourists choose to take a boat tour along the splendid coast of Capri. The boat ride is offered by numerous companies and lasts about 2 hours, the tour also includes the crossing of the Blue Grotto. If you have a private boat, you can moor next to the entrance of the cave using the special buoys, from there you can easily contact the sailors and board small boats to visit the cave.
