Marina Piccola: a Beautiful Beach in Capri

The island of Capri has a unique beach called “Marina Piccola”, a little harbor which offers one of the best views of the island as it lies directly opposite Capri’s Faraglioni.

This beach was used by the two emperors Augustus and Tiberius in the roman age.

Marina Piccola is loved not only for its views but also for its clear water and mythological significance.

Marina Piccola is famous for being warm even during winter when people are still bathing because the water is still warm.

The reason why, is because the beach is situated on the sunny south side of the island and is sheltered from the wind by a steep wall of rock. Unfortunately, the sun leaves the bay around 4 pm so it is better to get to the beach in the early morning.

Marina Piccola is also well-known, according to the Greek mythology, for being the place where the mermaids attempted to seduce Ulysses with their music.

Taking the stairs down to the “Scoglio delle Sirene”, cliffs once inhabited by the sirens described by Homer in his Odyssey, the rocks spit the bay into two Marinas: Marina di Mulo e Marina di Pennauro, which were used by the ancient Romans as small ports. Both beaches of Marina Piccola are made of light sand and gravel and get really crowded in summer. The water is crystal and has a beautiful shades of colours between light-dark blue and green.

What Marina Piccola has to Offer

It is possible to reach Marina Piccola in two ways:

The first way is by bus: the bus leaves from the Piazzetta close to Church of Sant’Andrea and takes you directly to the bay.
The second way is by foot: you can choose to follow Via Roma to Due Golfi then to walk the stairs down to the old Via Mulo (a beautiful route of about 15 minutes) or via the panoramic via Krupp, which starts just beneath the Gardens of Augustus.

The beach is also considered the best side of Capri because a part from its natural beauties, it offers different choices of restaurants and has all the possibility to spend time into different beach clubs like “La Canzone del Mare” or “Torre Saracena”, where you can have the comfort of a beach bed expecially when it’s crowded in summer time.

Marina Piccola offers also a couple of restaurants; on their beautiful terrace on the sea’s edge it is possible to have lunch enjoying a stunning view.

The menu includes fresh fish and seafood directly from the island.

Some restaurants, like “Le Sirene”, offers also a boat- service so you can enjoy your lunch directly on the boat.
